Kagawong
Team O’Fergmeijer

Fiddle dee dee! ‘Tis only a few days until the greenest of celebrations: St. Patrick’s Day! Team O’Fergmeijer has a friend coming up from Boston for the occasion. He’s totally the life of the patty. He’s more of a clover than a fighter, and always has the best advice. Our favourite is: in the pursuit of hoppiness, you can’t give in to beer pressure. It will only lead to making pour decisions and you don’t want to reach the pint of no return.

With the ice breaking up on the North O’Channel already, we’re sad to announce that the Kagawong outdoor rink is now closed for the season. Thanks to Andy O’Preyde for heading up a team of volunteers to keep the rink open as much as possible this winter. Please stay off the surface until the ice and slush is removed.

There is a special town hall meeting coming up on Tuesday, March 19 from 2 to 4 pm at the Park Centre to present the final draft of the township’s Five Year O’Strategic Plan. The discussion will be led by Capital O’Park and there will be an opportunity for community members to ask questions and provide feedback.

Why cook when you don’t need to? Come on out for the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser at the Kagawong Park Centre on Saturday, March 23 from 5 to 7 pm. Tickets are $20 at the door, with kids under 11 only $12, with all proceeds going to the O’Jabbawong Storytelling Festival this summer. Take-out is available. For more information contact Diane O’Larocque at 705-919-1751.

Mark your calendars! The Easter O’Bunny is hopping back into Kagawong on Saturday, March 30 for the annual Easter egg hunt! Youth of all ages are welcome to come by the Kagawong Park O’Centre at 11 am that day and fill their baskets with goodies. Who will find the Golden O’Ticket? You’ll have to come out to see! Thanks to the Billings Parks, Recreation and O’Wellness Committee for hosting this event.

The Billings Climate O’Action Committee is planning on hosting an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 20! The event should include community clean-up, a “junk in the trunk” sale, activities for youth and information on green technologies. The committee is currently looking for vendors interested in presenting green solutions with either a booth or in a discussion panel. Contact Vince O’Grogan at vgrogan@billingstwp.ca for more information.

Happy 29th birthday to Kim O’N and Mike O’M who are both celebrating their big days this week. You guys don’t look a day over 29! (Of course, the O’ptometrist recently told us we need a stronger prescription, but we stand by our statement.)

Town council approved a new Municipal Owned Water System O’Ad-Hoc Committee. The town will be issuing a call for members on their website soon (billingstwp.ca).

There have been sightings of geese so far, but no reports of seeing O’Sandhill cranes or of hearing their melodious coo. Will YOU be the first to hear the majestic coo of the cranes? Keep your ear to the ground and your eyes on the sky (also on the fields) and be sure to send in the date and time of your sighting/sounding to fergmeijer@gmail.com to participate in our annual Sandhill Crane challenge!

Some timely advice: Never iron a four-leaf clover. You don’t want to press your luck. Have a great week!

Meldrum Bay
Elaine Bradley

March 1 was euchre night here in Meldrum. There were three tables. High lady was Myra Duncanson with 98 points. That was a remarkable score and she was the lucky lady who got to bring home the money jar. Congratulations Myra. High man was Bob Benedict with 71; ladies’ lone hands was won by Rose Van Every with three; men’s lone hands was won by Rick Bradley with three; most euchres was won by Harold Rogers with eight; Brenda Carter won the 50/50 draw; Lois Wismer was the winner of the special prize.

Sunday was our monthly church service here in Meldrum Bay.  Jamie Nelder spoke and Lynette picked out the hymns. We all gathered afterwards for a really nice lunch with lots of visiting. Some could not stay because they were working in the sugar bush, but brought their contribution to the lunch anyway.

Here in Meldrum, maple syrup is running in earnest. The smoke is coming out of the chimneys of the sugar shacks where the sap is being boiled down.

There is a lot of open water in the bay. We did see an eagle standing on the ice. But the ice was so clear it looked like he was standing on the water.

Have a nice week, everybody.

On Friday, March 1 we went to play euchre in Meldrum Bay where there were 12 players.

On Monday morning, Albert Meijer and I went to town.  We did a lot of shopping for the roast beef dinner. When we got home, Brenda Carter and I went for a long walk and started picking up cans and bottles off the roadsides.

Monday evening, several of us went to the Burpee and Mills Complex to play euchre. There were seven tables full of players. Nikki Middleton announced there would be no euchre on Monday, March 11 due to March break plans.

On Tuesday afternoon, there was chair yoga at the hall and fire practice was in the evening..

On Wednesday there was line dancing at the hall at 7 pm.

On Thursday at 11 am there were 26 people at St Andrew’s Silver Water United Church attending the World’s Day of Prayer service. It was about Palestine. Most of the group went to Stop 540 for lunch. Sara and her crew did a great job. Afterwards, we went back to the church for the UCW meeting where lots of plans were discussed. There will be a fashion show on May 11. The UCW yard sale will be June 15. The Canada Day picnic will be June 29.

On Thursday evening there were six tables of euchre players at the Silver Water Community Hall. Congratulations to Harold Rogers who won the money jar.

Gladys Duncanson and I had several walks this week and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Safe travels to anyone with plans for March Break.

Happy St Patrick’s Day on Sunday, March 17. There will be a potluck supper at the Silver Water Community Hall to fundraise for the Angel Bus.
