Kagawong
Team Fergmeijer

For those of you who might be punfamiliar with Team Fergmeijer … saying we love a cheesy joke is a definite punderstatement. We hope that the joy we get from this column is apundantly clear, but while we love what we do, writing this column each week can sometimes feel like a huge pundertaking. Each week we have to sit down and put pun to paper, and it can be pundamentally exhausting. Especially because we need to make sure we get the pun-chlines just right. Hopefully, our punchant for jokes has not offended you. If they do make you a bit puncomfortable, just give it a chance – this column really groans on a person over time.

Today we are celebrating Valentine’s Day and Short Poems for a Short Month! Sprinkled throughout today’s column will be some love-themed poems. Have a short poem you’d like to share? Email it to fergmeijer@gmail.com to participate.

Congratulations to Ian Anderson who was appointed to the vacant council seat last week. Several interested citizens put their hats in the ring and were given the opportunity to address the mayor and council before voting commenced. Although there was an initial tie, Mr. Anderson was ultimately appointed to the position.

Roses are red, our poems are short;

Some make you laugh, some make you snort!

At time of writing the community rink is closed again due to the warm weather. Please stay off the surface as long as the rink is closed so we don’t undo all the hard work the volunteers put into making and maintaining the ice surface. Follow the township Facebook page for regular updates on the rink.

Roses are red, Kagawong is pretty;

We’d rather live here than in a big noisy city!

Attention all youth! Want to come work in the best village on the Island? Kagawong summer student position applications are now open for two marina assistants, one public works assistant, one museum assistant and one library assistant. Check out the township website for more details (http://billingstwp.ca) but don’t dilly-dally … applications will only be accepted until this Friday, February 16. For more information, contact Tiana at the township office, at tmills@billingstwp.ca.

Roses are red, February has been sunny;

Our column this week is particularly punny!

Roses are red, poetry’s not easy;

All of our efforts seem pretty cheesy.

It’s back! Don’t miss Kagawong Winterfest on the Family Day weekend! On Saturday and Sunday there will be family pick-up hockey (contact Andrew at 705-968-0375 for more details). In case anyone is interested, Team Fergmeijer’s favourite love song is “My Punny Valentine.” Have a great week!

Friday, February 2 at euchre there were four tables with two sitting out. High lady was Diane Jones with 75 points. High man was Murray Duncanson with 67 points. Ladies’ lone hands went to Millie Kelly with three and men’s lone hands went to Bob Benedict with three.  Most euchres went to Brenda Carter with 11 and nobody brought home the juice. The 50/50 was won by Joyce Benoit. The money jar was safe.

On Sunday, February 4 the church was opened for its first monthly winter meeting. Sixteen people attended and enjoyed the brunch afterwards. Rev. Jamie Nelder played the keyboard and spoke. Thank you, Jamie! We all enjoyed the service and the get-together afterwards. At the church and in the hall were displays of some of the quilts and baby things that had been prepared by the volunteers for disaster relief.

It’s been an amazing week weatherwise. We were travelling on 540 today and first two, then three more deer bounded across in front of us. We were glad we did not hit them. They looked very healthy and as if they were enjoying the warmer weather. At the bridge at Lake Wolsey there was an eagle proudly sitting on the osprey’s nest. We’ll see how that turns out as the year progresses.

We received a new shipment of towels for the aid packages that will be prepared here. More work awaits the volunteers.

DonnaKay and Doug McDonald went to Gore Bay a few weekends ago to watch their great-grandson, Ryder Varey, play hockey. They also went to watch their other great-grandson, Maverick Varey, play hockey on the weekend of January 20. Both boys went to Sault Ste. Marie to participate in a hockey tournament last weekend.

Friday, February 2, we went to Meldrum Bay to play euchre.

Gladys Duncanson and I walked on Saturday. The weather was perfect for the outing.

There were 15 people from the west end who travelled to Tehkummah on February 4 for a euchre tournament.

Monday was Gladys’ birthday. When I stopped in she was on the phone with son, Craig.

Monday night, we played euchre in Burpee and Mills. There were five tables full.

Exercise class is being held on Tuesday afternoons with Nell Staalstra leading for four weeks.

Fire practice was held Tuesday evening.

Line dancing is at the Silver Water Community hall on Wednesday evenings.

There were seven tables of euchre players at the Silver Water hall on Thursday night.

Bill Sundercock phoned me on Thursday and we chatted for a while.

Janet Joyce phoned to tell me she got all the towels shipped to be ready for packing into the hygiene kits starting in April. Thank you to Manitoulin Transport for donating the shipping.

Sara-Lyn Arnot has a new dog named Dolly. Dolly is tiny, friendly and busy being trained.

I had a phone visit with Alfreda Wickett. Happy 65th birthday to her son, Paul, and congratulations to him on retiring.

On Family Day weekend there will be a lunch and euchre tournament on Sunday, February 18 in Meldrum Bay. On Monday, February 19 there will be a potluck lunch and euchre in the afternoon instead of playing in the evening.

Condolences to the family of Roy Graham.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone on February 14!
