Kagawong

Team Fergmeijer

Did you know? Today, October 4th, is both World Animal Day, as well as Random Acts of Poetry Day! In honour of this auspicious pairing of celebratory days, Team Fergmeijer is pleased to present an ode to the Kagawong Gobble Brigade:

Ah, to be free like a Billings turkey,

And onto people’s lawns we could lurkey.

We’d set mischief to brew,

And strut around with bright hue.

Though in traffic, we’d be a bit jerky.

Betty B has been heard bragging about her new great-granddaughter who arrived last week. She was overheard saying that it doesn’t feel odd to be a great-grandmother so much as to realize her son is a grandfather. Congratulations to the whole family!

Congratulations to local Chris T on winning the Manitoulin Tennis Club singles tournament, held on September 17 at the MSS tennis courts. Chris joins local doubles champions Keith M and Mike M (no relation) in taking top prize at tournaments this year. Tennis continues every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning at Manitoulin Secondary School. All are welcome.

These three amigos all turned 29 on the same day in September. Jamie F is also celebrating, although he doesn’t turn 29 until this weekend. Many happy returns to you all!

Meldrum Bay

Elaine Bradley

Greetings from Meldrum Bay. The leaves are beautiful. Mississauga Light House Road and Cemetery Road are especially spectacular. Although the temperatures are warm, fall is definitely here. Our home is busy with bringing in the garden, oil changes and a septic pump out.

Friday night, September 22, at cards was exceptionally well attended and everyone seemed to have a great time. High lady was Karen Noble with 79 points; high man was Andy Cull with 78 points; ladies’ lone hands went to Elaine Bradley with four; and men’s lone hands went to Bob Benedict with four. Most euchres went to Sylvia Pfeiffer with 12; the juice was brought home by Sary-Lyn Arnot; the money jar is safe; there were five tables and two sit outs. During cards someone brought up my electric car. Now, the reason we bought it was to manage the winter with poor access to gas stations out here. But, at home charging, has turned out to be very delightful and we love the car as well as our older truck. I was complaining about the slowness that highway 540 was taking to get fixed and someone inferred that it was electric car drivers that were partially responsible due to not paying the gas tax. I googled the Ontario gas tax. According to Google, the gas tax in Ontario, goes to public transit. So, the guilt is now off my shoulders, at least for this.

Saturday, we attended the funeral for Eleanor Steele and Anne gave a lovely eulogy. She will be missed greatly.

Rose is back from a holiday with her sister in Southern Ontario. I was in charge of her plants and am relieved to say that they all survived.

There’s a large boat at the docks called the Sturgeon. It does fish population studies. It would be interesting to know what the results of this year’s studies are.

anything because it will be full of that wonderful vanilla.

Dave and Theresa Carlisle visited their daughter Stephanie in Waterloo last weekend.Sandy and Jim Miller from Ottawa are her for a few weeks visiting family.

Silver Water

Friday, September 15, two cars full of euchre players went to Meldrum Bay. Saturday, there was a market in our yard. We had a good crowd out for shopping and lunch.

Albert Meijer went to fire practice on Tuesday, September 19. Doug Wismer announced he is retiring from the fire chief position next summer.

Thursday, September 21 there was a large group out to play euchre at the Silver Water Community Hall.

Friday, September 22 we travelled to Meldrum Bay to play euchre.

Saturday, September 23, there was a market in our yard. We packed the yard sale up quickly so Albert and I could get the recycle bins open for 1 pm. We had lots of people bring out their recycling. A few of the summer residents were out for their last time and we look forward to seeing them in the spring. Thank you to everyone who brings egg cartons, Farquhar milk bags, pop cans and liquor containers. It keeps them out of the landfill.

September 23 was the bicycle ride to Meldrum Bay for the Mindemoya Hospital. I prepared most of the lunch on Friday and finished it up on Saturday morning. Holly Scott picked it up on her way to meet the bicyclists at the hotel in Meldrum Bay where they ate and rested, before turning around and heading home. There were 20 riders.

I went to Silver Lake for a short swim on Saturday, September 23. The water was very calm and it felt refreshing.

Gladys Duncanson, Brenda Carter and I have been walking as often as we can in the evenings. Brenda has been walking with Shelley Cull on Silver Lake Road near Ardith’s cottage.

Andy Cull is here visiting his mother, Ardith.

The Local Services Board held their election meeting on September 24. Thank you to the previous board and congratulations to the new board members.

Tuesday, Gladys Duncanson and I went to Gore Bay to do errands. She had a gift card for Linen and Lavender. We had a great time in that store seeing all the items for sale. I ended up bringing home a bag of goodies, too.

Our car had to go to McQuarrie’s on Wednesday. New rear brakes and one wheel bearing.

Thursday, Albert and I pulled the two rows of beets we planted. We gave some away to several neighbours. Then we roasted tray after tray in the oven and turned them into pickles. We have 18 jars done and some beets still to cook, or to give away.

Anne Boyd had Hydro One cut three trees in her yard. Albert has been picking up the wood. Anne has been clearing loads of the branches and removing them to the back yard.

Thursday, there were 29 euchre players at the Silver Water Community Hall.

Starting with the market on September 30, we are fundraising for the Manitoulin Resources food bank for the rest of this year. The news shows how empty the shelves are at food banks all over Canada, so we are going to help out our local one. Anyone who wants to donate non-perishable food items, there is a basket for collecting them at St. Andrew’s United Church in Silver Water. There is a collection at the Valu Mart in Gore Bay. Lyons Memorial United Church collects food for their food bank. Cheques can be mailed to Mindemoya. We will also collect it here in our yard and get it to Mindemoya in time for the preparation of the Christmas food hampers.

John Jagt’s turkeys have had their last meal and will be frozen for delivery early next week. I sure hope my turkey weighs less than twenty-five pounds or it will not fit in my roast pans.

There will be a Christmas themed market at our house on October 28 from 9 am to 12 noon.

We are looking forward to attending the Rotary’s auction on Thanksgiving weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to everyone.
