Kagawong
Team Fergmeijer
The kids are back to school today, so we thought we’d start off this week’s column with a pop quiz! If you had 19 oranges, 11 strawberries, five apples and nine bananas, what would you have? That’s right – a delicious fruit salad. (No groaning at that one; you know that was a first-class joke). Despite our current success, Team Fergmejier struggled sometimes in school. Especially in math class – we can’t count how many times we had to repeat that course. There were lots of more positive experiences though. We had the chance to learn how to surf, though we had to transfer to a boarding school. And there was the time the class clown tied all our shoelaces together. That was a really memorable class trip.
The last Wednesday market of the season is today, so if you haven’t yet been, hop to it! Thank you to all of the vendors who set up this year to make the Kagawong market the largest and most vibrant on the island. And a special thank you to Ethel N for organizing everyone and making sure each week ran smoothly. See you all next year!
Congratulations to a pair of Kagawong aces on winning the Manitoulin Tennis Club’s end-of-summer tournament on August 27! Mike M and Keith M came away with their pick of prizes as well as bragging rights. The tennis club continues to meet Sundays at 10 am and Wednesdays at 6 pm at the Manitoulin Secondary School courts. Players of all abilities are welcome to come out and play.
The Billings Library is officially back to its winter hours. They are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 7 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. The landfill continues on its summer hours until the end of October: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm.
We would like to wish a very happy birthday to Keith M who is alive and caking as he turned 29 last week! Rumour has it Keith doesn’t like to taco bout his birthday, but we at Team Fergmeijer feel that you should celebrate like it’s national dairy-free ice cream day – party like it’s sherbert day!
Aw shucks! A veritable CORNucopia of produce arrived this past week at Chez Park. They had so much they decided they maize well share the wealth and were kind enough to pass it along to some friends.
Good riddance to Ezra as he pursues post-secondary education down south. Don’t forget to start each day with a hearty bowl of Crunchy Loggs!
Thanks to all the volunteers who came out last week to plant trees along the Kagawong River. The river trail is one of the gems of the community, thanks to the Manitoulin Streams restoration projects.
Body Stories Dance Instruction is offering dance classes at the Park Centre in Kagawong this fall, for ages five through adult. Check out their fall schedule for more information, or to register: https://www.bodystoriesdance.com/schedule#schedule

One thing school didn’t teach us was the answer to that universal question: if belches were a colour, would they be burple? Have a great week!

Saturday, August 26 we had a market in our yard. The day started off with clouds and all the vendors wearing sweaters. It soon changed to warm and sunny enough to have the sweaters off.
We had several summer people out to shop for their last time before heading home.
Saturday afternoon, we had the recycle bins open. Both bins were emptied the week before and are now close to half full again. It is great to see all the neighbours out to use this service.
Murray and Gladys Duncanson went to Espanola to spend the day at their son Craig’s camp on Lake Penage. There was a crowd invited for supper including about 10 children. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the lake, the boat ride and visiting. They stayed the night and came home on Sunday morning.
Sunday morning, I made a batch of blueberry pies for the September 2 dinner. At 1 pm, I picked up Anne Boyd and headed to Sudbury. She had an early Monday morning appointment, so we decided spending the night in Sudbury was the best plan.
Sunday afternoon, Lois Miller and Iain MacDonald hosted a come and go tea at Kling’s Point. Sunday there was a potluck supper in Meldrum Bay with the church service held afterwards.
Monday morning, I dropped Anne at her appointment and went back 45 minutes later to pick her up. We then went to the Wholesale Club to finish shopping for the dinner. When I got home, Gladys and I went to the lake for her last swim of the season.
Tuesday, I took the car to McQuarrie Motors because the wipers had been acting up. A new part has been ordered. After that, I went to my bookkeeping job in Mindemoya. There was lots to do and I didn’t leave until 5 pm. Shortly after I left, I remembered that Albert needed the car to get to fire practice at 6:30 pm. I made it home just in time for him to leave.
Tuesday morning, Murray and Gladys left for southern Ontario. They met up with their son Clarke and grandson Aiden. Gladys had an appointment in Toronto on Wednesday. They returned home on Thursday.
Wednesday, a group of us spent several hours at the community hall putting together five large pans of lasagna.
Thursday, I made strawberry pies. I had a short swim in Silver Lake. The temperature was better than I had expected. Thursday evening, we had 5 3/4 tables of euchre players.
There are lots of events coming up. The UCW invites all the ladies to a tea and fashion show on September 9 at the Silver Water Community Hall. There is a Snowduster fish dinner in Rockville on September 9. September 10 we are making plans to attend the euchre tournament in Tehkummah. September 11 euchre starts up again in Burpee Mills in the complex at 7 pm.
