Silver Water

Karen Noble

Friday, June 30 Albert Meijer and I went to Gore Bay in the morning to the first vendor market and cafe in the basement of the community hall. Thank you to the Anglican Church ladies for the cake and coffee. There were quite a few vendors set up on the street.

Friday evening we travelled to play euchre in Meldrum Bay.

On Saturday, July 1 we held our Canada Day picnic. There was a huge crowd. Thank you to everyone who made pies, decorated, cooked hot dogs and sausages, worked all day, organized the ball games, provided floats for the parade, the judges for the parade, and to all those who attended. It was a very successful day for the UCW.

Sunday afternoon, I attended the graveside service for Wendall McKay.

Monday morning, we gathered at the Silver Water Cemetery for the burial service for my dad, Jim Noble. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Gladys Duncanson and I went around the lake Monday afternoon to have our swim with my nieces, Tamara Noble and Larissa Chevrette. Tamara returned to Ottawa by bus on Wednesday.

Tuesday evening, the fire team had their practice at the fire hall.

My brother Shawn and sister Aileen were here for the week. They are working on cleaning the farmhouse.

Wednesday, I travelled to Little Current and took a load of liquor containers for recycling. We are still collecting them, and the funds are for the Silver Water Community Hall.

Thursday, June 6 we had six tables of euchre players at the Silver Water Hall. We had a lot of fun and ate a birthday cake made for Steve.

Gladys and I swim every day and the lake is the perfect temperature now.

Brenda and Doug Carter have returned home after their trip south over the long weekend.

Max Trick is here while some renovations are being done at his cottage.

I hear there are trees being cut on Janice and Colin Frame’s property and some other preliminary work is going on at the site of their new home.

Happy 70th birthday to Chris Bigras on July 3. Happy 88th birthday to Arthur Addison on July 5. Happy 69th birthday to Steve Gugelyk on July 5.

Natalie and Roger Hayden from Lively were here on the weekend and visited their parents.

Sandy and Jim Miller had their daughter Moya and husband Jeff Rothwell and their girls Lucy and Olivia here on the weekend.

Dave and Theresa Carlisle have their daughter Stephanie from Waterloo home for a few weeks.

Jim and Margaret Blanchard from Tucson, Arizona are here for the summer at their cottage.

Meldrum Bay

Elaine Bradley

There are some fundraisers in the near future in Meldrum Bay that are going to be great fun. On Wednesday, July 12 there is an event hosted by Randi’s Snack Shack with live music. It will be held at the waterfront. It sounds like a really good time.

The Beef Barbecue is scheduled for Saturday, August 5 and we are hoping to see you there. It is always a great get-together with excellent food and we look forward to it every year.

Several locations in Meldrum are on the Art Tour this year. Paul and Tracy McAlister, Happy Camper Forge and Christine Mick at the Marina Centre are all on the tour map. The Art Tour is always a phenomenal event, don’t forget to include Meldrum Bay.

Joe’s Poker Paddle was a real success. It was an opportunity for a lot of people to have a great time and raise money for the Health Centre. After it was over there was a wrap up party with a Hawaiian Theme at Joe’s House here in Meldrum. Well done, Joe.

Tuesday of this week was another sewing event at the hall for disaster relief. It was well attended and a great deal was accomplished.

Friday night, June 30 at cards there were 13 people. Three tables plus one sit out. The high lady was Donna Kay McDonald with 82; high man was Bob Benedict with 82; ladies’ lone hands was won by Mildred Kelly with two and men’s lone hands went to Murray Duncanson with three; most euchres was won by Lisa Townsend with nine; the money jar was shared by Bob Benedict and Donna Kay McDonald. Congratulations to both of them for their good scores.

I saw my first fawn this week. It was so tiny, standing at the side of Mississagi Lighthouse Road. Our neighbour on Water St. had already seen both a fawn in his yard with the doe and a small bear on Water Street a couple of weeks ago. They’re very cute but it’s a warning to be extra careful when driving.

Have a great week!

Kagawong

Team Fermeijer

After the recent heat wave, Team Fergmiejer has a burning question for you: Did anyone else feel like they were mostly made up of sweat and sunscreen last week? We like the summer as much as the next dynamic duo, but there were a couple of days that felt like we were living in an oven, but at least cookies come out of an oven. We spent three days sweating like a marathon runner (without all that pesky exercise).

After an amazing show by the Fitzgeralds last week, the Kagawong Concert Series organizers are at it again with Teilhard Frost and Chris McKhool playing tonight at 7:30 pm at the Old Church on the Hill. At the time of writing there were still tickets available!

Best birthday wishes go out to Linda R and Ardis F who both turn… let us check our notes… 29 this week! At a certain age, you really do have to break out the glasses to read your birthday cards. The wine glasses, that is.

The Angel Bus fundraising committee is at it again – they are selling tickets for a chance to win a fabulous, hand-made quilt all summer long. You can find them at the Kagawong market on Wednesday and on Fridays at the Gore Bay market. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Funds raised supports the ongoing operating costs of the Angel Bus.

On the topic of fabulous quilts… the Manitoulin Quilt Show is this weekend in Assiginack (26 Clover Valley Road, Manitowaning). Proudly presented by the Island Quilters Guild and the Happy Quilters of Gore Bay, the show runs Friday, July 14 (2 to 8 pm), Saturday the 15 (10 am to 5 pm) and Sunday the 16 (10 am to 1 pm).

The first of several sessions of the library’s free American Sign Language lessons (led by Georgian College instructor Andrea Wist) were a big hit! The next set of classes are July 25 and 27. Each class starts at 10 am at the market pavilion. Classes are open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). Come to one or take them all! For more information, email the library billingsreads@gmail.com.

The library’s annual used book sale has been included in the NorthWords Festival and is being held Saturday, July 22 from 11 am to 3 pm at the pavilion (the covered rink is the backup in case of inclement weather). They can always use volunteers to help with setup. It’s a great way for teens to get their volunteer hours in, too. Contact billingsreads@gmail.com for more information.

In addition to the library sale, with hundreds of books for sale at deep discounts, there will also be a ‘local author showcase’ in the same area featuring several authors with links to the Island including Mnawaate Gordon-Corbiere, James Simon Mishibinijima, Don Roberts, Shelly Pearon and Stephanie Malo, among others. The authors will have displays, books for sale and are excited to chat with visitors. For more information email northwordsfest@gmail.com or visit the festival’s Facebook page (fb.com/northwordsfest).

“Speakers Night in Kagawong” is tomorrow (Thursday)! The Old Mill Heritage Centre welcomes Arthur Milnes and Steve Paikin on Thursday, July 13 at 7:30 pm at the Park Centre for an evening of recalling historic Canadian and American leaders and events.

Don’t forget to check out the new Kagawong walk and run routes map located on the back of the MICA sign near the Cedar Maze and discover a new way to explore the area!

4elements Living Arts is looking for vendors, workshop facilitators and an artist in residence for their 2023/2024 season. Contact info@4elementslivingarts.org for more information.

Overheard at the market last week: “I’m not sweating, I’m oozing charisma.” Have a great week!
