Team Fermeijer
Your friendly neighbourhood columnists were out shopping for the day last week and hit up an amazing sweater store. They were so knowledgeable. Did you know it takes three sheep to make up one sweater? We didn’t even know sheep could knit! We ran into a bit of trouble when one of us went to buy a lovely pullover and her credit card was declined. It all worked out okay, she just had to swipe the cardigan.
Have so many old electronics kicking around that it hertz? Manitoulin Secondary School will be collecting e-waste Monday, May 29 to Friday, June 2 (3 to 5 pm) and Saturday, June 3 (10 am to 3 pm). Bring any dead electronics, including appliances, batteries of any size, devices and even propane tanks to be recycled.
Manitoulin Metal wants to show their appreciation for all the community support they received this year, and what better way to show gratitude than with pancakes! June 1st, the team will be serving up breakfast for dinner at MSS from 6 to 8 pm. Meet the team over pancakes, sausages and hashbrowns; check out Bumblebee the robot, watch demos, check out the silent auction and take part in interactive activities.
Self-care is important. We at Team Fergmeijer like to take a little nap on the sofa before taking ourselves up to bed for our main sleep. It’s called a snors d’oeuvre.
Go fly a kite! No, really. On Sunday, June 4 in Gore Bay you can go fly a kite in the Kite Festival! From 1 to 4 pm you can enjoy kite-flying at the Western Manitoulin Community Garden. It’s a free event and fun can be had for all ages. Enjoy the barbecue lunch, get crafty at the Make a Scarecrow station and check out a Pop-up Play area for the littles. There will also be community service people and their vehicles for viewing and questions. Bring your own kite or use one the festival provides.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Casey B, Morgan E and David H this week. You are as old as you are brilliant! Which is both good news and bad.

Last Saturday we held our annual Quad Run. It was well organized. Trails were set up and permission was obtained from property owners whose land the trails crossed. The dinner of stew and chili was prepared. The weather was cold and rainy, plus the hydro was out for the whole Island. But still the brave quad drivers came. We had a great turnout. Although people were cold and wet as they returned, they had big smiles as we dished up chili and stew for them. At the end there were wonderful prizes handed out. Thanks to the businesses who donated.
Sunday morning the church was packed for our first service of the season. It was a beautiful sunny day. Janice took the service. We enjoyed Peggy and Helen’s muffins and coffee at the end as we stood around and visited.
The afternoon was more solemn. Janice Frame presided over Joan VanEvery’s internment. There were lots of family there and many friends as well.
We drove our Tesla to Espanola this week for an appointment. It was a lovely bright and sunny trip. On the way home we enjoyed looking at the roadside Manitoulin Gold. They are always such a delight.
Have a great week everybody!

Friday, May 19 euchre was cancelled in Meldrum Bay so that the dining room could be set up for Saturday’s ATV run and lunch.
Saturday, May 20 we helped get the generator going for the yard sale held by Lori Walker. The electricity shut off promptly at 7 am and did not come back on until supper time here. Lori had a lot of traffic but is still set up and planning to be open again on May 27. Brenda Carter and Lori both had some baking for sale. Brenda’s hot coffee and muffins were a hit as well.
Saturday afternoon, Albert Meijer and I took Doug and Brenda Carter to Meldrum Bay where we had lunch. There were a lot of wet ATV participants, but everyone seemed very happy with the day. The electricity had come on at 11 am at some of the homes in Meldrum Bay so that is where a lot of stew and chili was heated. The homemade rolls and desserts were delicious. Thank you to Sandra Hartley and Elaine Bradley for their part in dealing with the medical situation while we were there.
Sunday morning, Brenda and Doug Carter went with me to Meldrum Bay for Joan Van Every’s committal service. The weather was perfect and there were lots of people in attendance. Lunch was provided by the family afterwards in the Meldrum Bay Community Hall.
Monday, May 22 was the Victoria Day holiday. I saw a lot of traffic heading home with trailers and ATVs.
Monday evening, a group of us went to euchre in Evansville. They had seven tables.
Tuesday was garbage pick-up morning.
Brenda went with me to Gore Bay on Tuesday. The car got an oil change and the winter tires switched out. We walked from McQuarrie’s up to BMO and did some other errands on the way. We finished our wait at Loco Beanz which was very busy. We had a short walk in Evansville on the way home to pick up cans and then another stop to pick asparagus.
Sara-Lyn Arnot arrived home on Wednesday from her weekend in Buckhorn participating in a vendor market.
Thursday night we had five-and-a-half tables of euchre players at the Silver Water Community Hall.
Saturday, June 10 there will be a ham and scalloped potato dinner at the Silver Water Hall at 5 pm.
Get well wishes to Mike Tyler.
Condolences to the family of Pauline Van Every.
