Four highway construction projects slated for work on Manitoulin this summer

MANITOULIN—With the summer construction season upon us, Islanders and visitors to Manitoulin can expect a number of Ministry of Transportation road and bridgework projects over the next few months.

Crews will be continuing work on the Kagawong Creek bridge replacement on Highway 540 at Kagawong. The bridge project should be completed by the end of June. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane by means of temporary traffic signals.

Replacement of the Mindemoya Creek bridge on Highway 551 is currently underway in Providence Bay. A single lane temporary modular bridge has been utilized as a detour while the existing bridge is removed and replaced. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals. The estimated completion for the bridge is late fall 2017.

Highway 6 will see 23.6 kilometres resurfaced 10.5 kilometres north of Highway 542 (0.8 kilometres north of Cowan’s Side Road) northerly to 0.3 kilometres south of the Ten Mile Point Lookout. Daily single lane closures on Highway 6 will be managed by traffic flagging operations while resurfacing is carried out. Construction is anticipated to be complete in early September 2017.

The reconstruction and resurfacing of Highway 540, one kilometre west of Highway 6 at Little Current, westerly for 17.6 kilometres. Daily single lane closures will be managed by traffic flagging for culvert replacements and ongoing paving operations. The anticipated completion of this project is late fall 2017.
