SHEGUIANDAH—Kayak and paddleboards plied the waters of Sheguiandah Bay this past weekend at the inaugural edition of Sheguiandah Park Days as Northeast Town Mayor Al MacNevin and councillors Christine Jones, Bill Koehler and Melissa Peters served up free hot dogs, sausages and hamburgers to attendees.
The kayaks and paddleboards were courtesy of Kagawong’s Wind and Wave and Mark Gibeault’s By Path or Paddle out of Manitowaning. Mr. Gibeault also brought along a massive voyageur freight canoe to display as used in The Dennie race recently.
The big hit of the day was undisputedly the archaeological tours of the famed Sheguiandah Site conducted by Dr. Pat Julig of Laurentian University. The tours, related in another story in this edition of The Expositor, explored the national historical site where artifacts dating back more than 10,000 years have been discovered.
Another popular hit with visit
ing crowds almost didn’t make its debut. The big blue chair, donated to the Northeast Town by OPP detachment commander Staff Sergeant Kevin Webb, was back in place after taking a mysterious sojourn to Al Rolston’s quarry across the bay.
Luckily, the giant fibreglass chair was discovered in time to return to its place of honour at the end of the Sheguiandah breakwater—there now for the taking of souvenir photographs—and no, the chair was not discovered in the company of a cadre of masked purloined garden gnomes.
Sheguiandah Park boasts a brand new gazebo to provide shelter from both rain and sun and the shelter saw good service in the latter capacity as the sun shone brightly though out the day’s events.
