Fire heavily damages Little Current home

LITTLE CURRENT—The Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Fire Department was called to a house fire at 35 Worthington Street in Little Current at 5:12 am on Saturday, November 30.

“Upon arriving on scene department members met up with one member of the household who had escaped without injury and reported no other persons inside with fire in the basement,” said Fire Chief Duane Deschamps. “Firefighters then entered the structure encountering the presence of heavy smoke and heat and proceeded to the fire area. The team was successfully able to extinguish the fire quickly resulting in stopping further loss. The fire department then continued with overhaul operations and smoke removal.”

Mr. Deschamps noted that fire investigators have deemed the fire to be “not suspicious and caused by a faulty electrical heating device.”

The family does have insurance.

The fire chief said he would like to remind everyone of the importance of having a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home and outside of sleeping areas.
