TEHKUMMAH—On Saturday, June 7 about 25 geocachers, letterboxers and campers gathered at Gordon’s Park Eco Resort for the first ever geocaching flash mob to take place on Manitoulin Island. The event was part of the annual official World-Wide Flash Mob Geocaching Event (WWFM), which takes place each year in over 40 countries simultaneously. This year the event ran in 792 locations in 52 countries including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa and many more.
The 15 minute event at Gordon’s Park was hosted by geocachers “Rick on the Range” and “The Happy Bee” and included a meet and greet, an opportunity to exchange travel bugs and geocoins, bubble blowing, a special snack, a group photo and distribution of a unique “first to find” geocoin to the most enthusiastic bubble blower. According to the official event posting on geocaching.com, “These caching events are intended to bring together geocachers and introduce others (newbies) to the hobby” and this event did just that by welcoming the public to join in!
This exciting gathering kicked off a great summer of events happening at Gordon’s Park Eco Resort. Geocachers will certainly want to check out the School’s Out Geocaching Weekend happening at the park June 27 to June 30. With over 50 caches to be found throughout the park which include clues to a murder mystery, a putt-putt challenge, social campfires, a potluck supper, a series of night caches and great prizes and awards, the event is the perfect Canada Day long weekend adventure for geocachers of all skill levels.
