KALKASKA, MI—The Espanola Rivermen were able to secure a close 3-2 against the Kalkaska Rhinos on Sunday in Canadian International Hockey League action.
Espanola was able to win the back end of a two-game weekend series in the Michigan city.
Andrei Yanovich scored twice and Andrew Demarco added one in the win for the Rivermen. Jerome Witkowski had both Rhino goals.
“We earned two points through a hard-fought victory tonight,” said Espanola assistant coach Jason Rapcewicz. “We found ourselves in some penalty trouble in the second period but managed to only give up one power play goal. We came out in the third period and stuck to our game plan and managed to steal two points. Great job by the Rhinos this weekend. They played extremely well and fought hard all weekend. Tonight we were rewarded with a win by sticking to our game plan. We executed a 60-minute effort and we have two points to show for it.”
“I thought the game tonight was evenly matched for the most part,” said Kalkaska head coach Krzysztof Oliwa. “We probably out-chanced Espanola two to one in the second half of the game. Their goaltender had a real good night and kept them in the third, but Espanola played a real disciplined road game, and took advantage of some poor goaltending early.”
Catch the Rivermen this Friday, December 12 at the Espanola barn when they take on the Batchewana Attack. The puck drops at 7:30 pm.
