Two brothers from Massey, and a male from Birch Island, found themselves behind bars on the Easter long weekend, following two separate disturbance complaints in the early morning hours of March 27, 2016.
At 1:20 a.m., members of the Espanola Police Service attended at a local licensed premise in response to a complaint by the manager that an intoxicated male was causing a disturbance in the bar, and was refusing to leave. Upon arrival, officers spoke to a 27-year old inside the bar, and instructed him to leave. While dealing with this male, his 30-year old brother, who was also intoxicated, walked up and started to intervene. When instructed to leave, both men failed to do so, and had to be escorted from the bar by police. Once outside, they continued to be loud and belligerent, and due to the fact that they were incapable of caring for each other due to their level of intoxication, it was in their best interest, and that of the public, to arrest them for being intoxicated in a public place. They were transported to the Espanola Police Service, where they were lodged in the cells until sober. The two brothers were each charged with being intoxicated in a public place under the Liquor Licence Act, and failing to leave premise when directed under the Trespass to Property Act.
At 5:10 a.m., police attended at a residence on Park Street, in response to a complaint that a 19-year old intoxicated male was involved in an altercation with the complainant, whom he was spending the night with. Upon arrival, police located the male standing outside the apartment building, and due to his level of intoxication, and an inability to return to his own home in Birch Island safely, police arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place. He was lodged at the Espanola Police Service until sober, and issued a $65.00 fine under the Liquor Licence Act upon release.
