Espanola man arrested in impaired collision

WHITEFISH FALLS–On Wednesday, November 28 at 11:47 am, Manitoulin OPP received a call reporting of a single vehicle rollover that just occurred on Hwy 6 about five kilometres south of Whitefish Falls. Police arrived on scene to find that 1998 Black Plymouth neon had broken through guardrails and had gone over the embankment and rolled over coming to rest in a ditch. Police quickly discovered that the driver had fled the scene as tracks were observed in the snow leading away. Police tracked the driver and found him hiding in a remote camp about two kilometres from the scene of the collision. The driver was arrested and transferred to the Manitoulin Health Centre for minor injuries and released into police custody.

The driver was identified as a 44-year-old male of Espanola. He has been charged with the following offences.

• Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada;
• Failing to Provide a Breath Sample contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada;
• Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario;
• Drive Motor Vehicle with No Drivers Licence Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario;
• Drive Motor Vehicle not equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario; and
• Driver Fail to Wear Seatbelt contrary to the Highway traffic Act of Ontario.

The accused has been released from custody on a promise to appear for Criminal Court in Gore Bay on December 17, 2012 to answer to the said charges.
