January 25, 1929 – May 14, 2017
Edward (Ted) Bassingthwaite died peacefully about 4 pm (EST) on May 14, 2017 at Mindemoya Hospital, in Mindemoya, Ontario. He was 88 at the time and only recently returned to his beloved home of Manitoulin Island in September of 2016 after a life of traveling the world while in the Royal Canadian Air Force from which he retired after 30 years of service to his country. He and his wife Mary, who passed away in 2015, had been living in Edmonton, Alberta for many years so they could be close to their grandchildren. For him Manitoulin Island was home regardless of the many places he had lived and after Mary’s death wanted with all his heart to be where he felt his only home ever was. He is survived by his son James and grandchildren Jason James, Natasha Katrina and Victoria Mae, brother William, and sisters, Jean, Nora, and Carol. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters Jim, Ivy, Mary Lou, and Ron. He was the son of Raymond Jonathan and Edna May (Nevills) Bassingthwaite who are both deceased. A celebration of his life will take place in about mid-July so family and friends can gather. Details to follow by late June. His son James can be contacted at 780-938-2558.
