GORE BAY – Construction has begun on the new four-unit housing structure being built in the town of Gore Bay.

“The construction has started,” stated Jeff Gilmore of Martian Properties this past Monday. “The clearing of the land has been completed and the footings are in. There was a bit of a delay with the interesting times we are in.”

“Quality Homes has taken over. They hired Dennis McCann of McCann Concrete who is putting in the foundation,” said Mr. Gilmore, who pointed out the excavation work is being carried out by H & R Noble Construction.

Mr. Gilmore said that because of the elevation of the ground where the units are being built, there will be two two-unit duplexes constructed and then they will be married together. “By doing this it will make their appearance nicer.”

Each building will have one two-bedroom and one three-bedroom unit and each building will be 82 foot long and 28 feet wide.

The second duplex will be arriving in the next two or three weeks, said Mr. Gilmore.

The housing units will be for rent. A zoning bylaw amendment had been approved by Gore Bay council in September 2019. The application had been made by Mr. Gilmore on behalf of Martian Properties Inc. to allow for a second four-unit dwelling in the general commercial zone. No details have been announced as to when or if a second four-unit multi-residence will be constructed.

The units are being constructed on the road on the way into the Inn at Gore Bay, on the east side. It is located about 50 yards from the area of East Street that goes up the hill.

Mr. Gilmore had explained to council at the meeting in September, “the reason we are looking for a zoning amendment is that the property is currently zoned general commercial which does not allow full kitchen facilities in each unit. We want this in place so that families and those wanting to rent the units will have (full kitchen facilities) in their unit.” There is capacity for the sewer system.

There will be ample parking at the building unit, and the units will not have garages attached to them.
