Committee formed to establish a fitness/gym centre in town

GORE BAY—A committee has been formed in Gore Bay to look at a fitness/gym centre being established in town. One possibility being looked at by the committee is converting the town’s former senior drop in centre in the Gore Bay Medical Centre into a fitness/gym.

“We held the inaugural meeting of the committee (on June 8),” Gore Bay councillor Jack Clark, who is chairing the committee, told members of council at its meeting last week. He pointed out there was a number of takeaways from the meeting, including looking at the (medical centre) facility and the issues around it: security and access and equipment.

“But it’s a nice facility and clean,” said Mr. Clark. “We will be meeting within the next two weeks to discuss our findings and to look at putting together a business plan to bring to council.”

“It sounds like the committee has made a good start,” stated Mayor Ron Lane.

Councillor Clark told council the committee has discussed the different types of equipment that are available and the committee is looking into the possibility of asking for donations of used equipment as well as purchasing new. The pricing and types of equipment need to be researched, he said.

“How much are you looking for in terms of your budget?” asked Councillor Kevin Woestenenk.

“We are looking at about $10,000 for equipment at this point, but we need to get a clearer idea what type of equipment we want and what it will cost,” said Mr. Clark.

In regards to the committee meeting held on June 8, several options and concerns were addressed concerning how patrons would access the building and fitness space and the use of the facility. Those included card or key entry, use of cameras, age groups, insurance and liability, and having written policies in place. The committee agreed that research will need to be conducted on the types of security to use.

As for equipment, the committee discussed the different types of equipment that is available. Considering the limited funds available, the committee discussed asking for donations of used equipment as well as purchasing new. Other issues were addressed like the ventilation in the building, and additional items to purchase for the space including, mirrors, flooring, showers, etc.

A list of equipment options and pricing is to be researched and brought forward at the next committee meeting.

“Will meet before the end of June,” said Councillor Clark.

“It sounds good, and is moving ahead,” said Mayor Lane. He noted that  it is good to see so much interest on the committee by citizen representatives. The members of the committee include Jack Clark, Dave Carr, Scott McDougall, Anya Wright, Stasia Carr, Daryl Leighton and Brad Wright.
