MANITOULIN – On August 13 and 14, 2014 members of the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and Wikwemikong Tribal Police engaged in a two day enforcement program focusing on commercial vehicle violations.
The enforcement blitz took place all over Manitoulin Island in areas where there is a high commercial truck traffic routes. “The police services teamed up with enforcement officers from the Ministry of Transportation who specialize in commercial vehicle regulations. This initiative showed a strong, coordinated effort aimed with the ultimate goal of making our local communities roads safer for everyone.” states Staff Sergeant Kevin Webb Detachment Commander for the Manitoulin OPP.
During the two day blitz the Ministry of Transportation Officers conducted 52 inspections and a total of 33 commercial vehicle charges were laid. These charges resulted from mechanical issues like leaking wheel seals, broken springs, and inoperative parking brakes to steering system issues. Also charges were laid in pre-trip issues, CVOR issues and vehicles not displaying a valid annual inspection device.
The OPP and Wikwemikong Police services laid a total of 15 charges under the Highway Traffic Act. This includes speeding, stop sign violations, non-use of seatbelts, studded tire violations, fail to surrender licence, and CVOR violations. Also three drivers were found to be driving under suspension.
“We plan to conduct this initiative again in a continued effort to make our highways safer”, added Staff Sergeant Webb.
