Michael’s Bay Historical Society plans townsite community picnic

MICHAEL’S BAY—The Michaels Bay Historical Society (MBHS) is planning an old-fashioned picnic and tour of the Michael’s Bay townsite in late August.

“We are planning to have what we hope will be the first of many annual weekend get togethers at the site,” said MBHS president Ben Lentir. A picnic and tour will take place on August 26th. “It will be an open house picnic open to the general public and will allow people to see what is taking place, the work we have done and get a guided tour of the townsite. The idea is for people to see the site, bring their own picnic and sit by the river and mingle. I would like to see an annual heritage-day celebration held at the (town) site.”

Mr. Lentir said the picnic and tour, “will hopefully receive a lot of interest and there will be more people interested in becoming a member of (MBHS) once they see what we are doing.”

“Right now, we are continuing to work on the access to the cemeteries and the townsite and streets as we continue to move forward toward our main goal of having the streets laid out and cleaned,” said Mr. Lentir.

Mr. Lentir acknowledged the tremendous work of Maurice Sagle in a work bee at the worksite on July 17. Mr. Sagle worked alone for over four hours cleaning, leveling and getting the grounds ready for the old-fashioned picnic and tour and carefully marking off the grave sites for later fencing around them.
