Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

It’s been an exciting week at Manitoulin Secondary School, with spring in the air and plenty happening both inside and outside the classroom! Let’s take a look at what students got up to this week.

A huge congratulations goes out to our robotics team, Manitoulin Metal, which competed at the provincial championships in Mississauga this past weekend. Each year the team has six weeks to build a brand-new robot before competing against other teams from across Ontario. After months of hard work and innovation, the team brought home the Provincial Sustainability Award, impressing the judges with their long-term plans and environmental action. Their robot BEE-hemoth, competed well but unfortunately did not make it to the finals. The team is looking forward to their off-season events such as STEM nights in the community and Staying In Touch Tech Help Sessions. Whether you’re into marketing, business, coding, building or problem-solving, the robotics team is a great way to get involved—and they’re always looking for new members.

The countdown is officially on for this year’s grads! Grad photos that were taken on March 25 are now available to order. Looking ahead, Prom night is scheduled for Friday, June 6, and the graduation ceremony will take place on June 12. Plans are already underway to make both events extra special. Staff are reminding grads to check their email and the Grade 12 Google Classroom for important updates and scholarship information.

It is hard to believe we are just three months away from summer break. The countdown began with an April Fool’s Day prank on students. The morning announcements claimed that the school was swapping morning and afternoon classes. While some students (cough, me) were briefly panicked, the announcement was followed up with a light-hearted “Happy April Fool’s Day!”

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at archery, now’s your chance! The Archery Club is starting back up! Led by Ms. Mavec, it is now up and running, and it’s already drawing a crowd. Open to beginners and experienced archers alike, the club focuses on developing proper form, and safety skills, and building up for a competition happening later this year.

That is all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
