Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

With just a couple days left until the Christmas break, students are busier than ever. Let’s take a look at what happened this week!

Earlier this semester, Headstrong, a mental health awareness group at MSS, hosted a photo contest centered around the theme of “Finding Joy.” The contest encouraged students to capture moments that brought them happiness and joy. The winners have been announced, and congratulations go to Luis Anaya, Elizabeth Cooper and Myah Gravelle for their outstanding photos! Honorable mentions were given to Colin Goodfellow and Hannah Dawe.

MSS recently conducted a survey to gather student opinions on paper waste reduction. With 96 responses, the survey revealed a fairly even split in preferences: 38 percent of students preferred paper handouts, 43 percent favoured digital and 19 percent were unsure. Importantly, 79 percent of students felt it was important to reduce paper waste at MSS. Based on these results, the recommended next steps include offering both digital and paper options based on student preferences and encouraging everyone to recycle paper when finished. These measures will help MSS become more environmentally friendly and reduce its overall paper waste.

The holiday celebrations continued with the “12 Days of Christmas” events planned this week. Here’s what was on the agenda: Monday, December 9 students could take photos with Student Council representatives dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus. On Tuesday, December 10 there was festive karaoke or carol-oke, in the cafeteria. On Wednesday, December 11 there was holiday trivia with the Reach For The Top trivia team. Thursday, December 12 was decorate yourself day, students were encouraged to adorn themselves with Christmas ornaments. Lastly, Friday, December 13th was Headstrong’s baking exchange.

Next week, on Tuesday, December 17, there will be a fundraiser volleyball tournament hosted by the Athletics Association as part of the “12 Days of Christmas.” Teams that were made by the association were posted on Friday, December 13. To sign up, there was a $10 player fee, with funds going directly to support athletics at MSS. Each team is guaranteed three games, making for a day that is sure to be full of fun and friendly competition.

Candygrams are being sold to help fundraise for the upcoming Europe trip. For $2 students can get candy delivered to their friends homeroom class. Students on the Europe trip will be visiting three cities in Europe including Paris, London, and Rome over the March Break.

That is all for this week, until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
