Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

There are only four weeks left until the much-anticipated Winter Break. This fast-approaching holiday marks the completion of the third month of the school year. For the Grade 9s, they are more than halfway through their very first semester of high school. Having settled into classes, routines and newfound responsibility, the Grade 9s are now comfortable with their new school environment. On the other hand, the Grade 12s are getting even closer to their graduation. So now, as the Grade 9s have adjusted to this change in their lives, the Grade 12s are preparing for another one.

To prepare, MSS has offered several opportunities for trips to post-secondary institutions nearby. Last week, several senior students visited Sault College and Algoma University on Wednesday, November 20 and Thursday, November 21. Students got a taste for college and university life through lectures on nursing, social work, psychology, economics and social development programs. Participants also got to explore outdoor courses, trade and engineering shops. In the evening, the group went bowling together, taking advantage of their time off of the Island.

MSS has a few fundraisers happening at the moment. The robotics team, Manitoulin Metal, is hosting a Krispy Kreme doughnut fundraiser to raise money for their robot’s expenses this year. The products will be delivered on December 5, making many Islanders several doughnuts happier. Additionally, the Student Council is hosting a Purdy’s chocolate bar fundraiser, with the amount of funds raised correlating to a prize for students. Almost $1,500 has been raised so far!

MSS said goodbye to Cassie Noble, a beloved front desk staff member. Ms. Noble will be continuing her work in Gore Bay at C.C McLean Public School. Staff members (and some students) wished her farewell with a small gathering and cake on Friday, November 23. MSS will miss you, Ms. Noble!

That’s all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
