Traffic complaint on Highway 540 results in impaired arrest
One person has been arrested for impaired operation after police received a traffic complaint.
On March 9 at approximately 10 pm, officers with the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint reporting a possible impaired driver on Highway 540 in Billings township. Shortly after, police located the vehicle on Highway 540 near Black Rock Road and conducted a traffic stop. Further investigation on scene resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.
The driver, Trinity Cada, 24 years old from M’Chigeeng First Nation, was charged with: operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), drive vehicle with cannabis readily available, drive motor vehicle-no licence, operate a motor vehicle without insurance.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Gore Bay on April 15.

Arrest made in two vehicle crash
On March 11 at approximately 7:30 pm, the Manitoulin OPP received a call on a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on Highway 17 in Walden township. One of the drivers involved called to report that the other driver was potentially impaired.
Police received a second call, reporting that the driver fled from the collision scene. There were no injuries as a result of this collision.
Police located the vehicle, which had been abandoned by its driver, on Highway 6 in Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN). Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance, and an arrest was made.
Additionally, police seized an amount of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $16,300. The driver, a 43-year-old from M’Chigeeng First Nation, is facing impaired and drug trafficking related charges. They are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on April 15.
$30,000 in suspected fentanyl seized at RIDE check
Two people have been arrested and are facing charges after a reduce impaired driving everywhere (RIDE) check.
On March 10 at approximately 11 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 near Foucault Drive in Espanola. A vehicle came through the RIDE check, and officers detected an odor of cannabis emanating from the vehicle. Further investigation on scene resulted in the driver and passenger being arrested.
Additionally, police seized an amount of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $30,000 and approximately $2,500 in Canadian currency.
As a result, the driver, Johvonne Sterling, 30 years old from Etobicoke and Mark Tucker, 22 years old from Etobicoke were both charged with possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking-opioid, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The driver was also charged with drive vehicle while cannabis readily available.
Both accused were held in custody and were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice bail court in Sudbury on March 11.
Espanola OPP arrest snowmobile operator for impaired operation
One person is facing impaired related charges after police received a call concerning a person on a snowmobile.
On March 9, at approximately 7:30 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP received a call reporting that a person on a snowmobile arrived at a medical facility in Espanola and was potentially intoxicated. Police arrived on scene, and further investigation resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.
As a result, Steven Varey, 35, from Espanola was charged with operation while impaired-alcohol, and operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 7.
RIDE check in Little Current results in impaired arrest
One person has been arrested for impaired operation as a result of RIDE check.
On March 12, at approximately 3 am, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP were conducting a RIDE check on Meredith Street in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI). A vehicle came through the RIDE check, and police began an investigation. As a result, police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance and an arrest was made.
The driver, Joseph Bowerman, 51, from NEMI, was charged with operation while impaired-drugs, drive a motor vehicle with no licence and fail to have insurance card.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on April 15.
