Carjacking suspect from Manitoulin charged by police

ESTAIRE—A suspect from Manitoulin Island has been charged in connection to a carjacking in Estaire, south of Sudbury while a second suspect is still at large.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that on December 5 a struggle had occurred, and the owner of the vehicle was able to escape the incident without any injuries and contacted the police. OPP Constable Rob Lewis said the victim and the accused knew each other. 

The police had been called to Hendrie Road, in the Nepewassi Lake area around 7 pm on November 27.

Following an investigation by the police, the OPP arrested and charged a man from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT) with assault, robbery and theft over $5,000.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a second suspect, but no information has been provided about the individual.

The suspect was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court January 8 in Sudbury.

Names released on two people charged in shooting in Wiikwemkoong

LITTLE CURRENT—The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has released the names of the arrested individuals in relation to the recent shooting investigation in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT).

On November 28, the Manitoulin OPP assisted the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) on a shooting investigation that occurred in the area of Rabbit Island Road and Tomas Lane in Wiikwemkoong. As a result of the altercation, one person sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Two people were safely taken into custody that same day.

As a result of the investigation, Terrance Trudeau, 26, from Wiikwemkoong, was charged with attempt to murder using a prohibited firearm, contrary to section 239(1)(a) of the criminal code (CC), unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, section 91 (1) CC, possession of a schedule one substance-cocaine, section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).

Additionally, Shauna Limin, 28, from Whitefish River First Nation was charged with accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence, section 463(b) CC, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, section 91(1) CC, and obstruct peace officer, section 129(a) CC.

Both accused individuals appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice bail court in Gore Bay on November 29 and were remanded into custody.

The investigation is being conducted by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) and the Manitoulin OPP crime unit, under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch.

Earlier in the day of November 28, police had issued a hold and secure for residents of the Rabbit Island area as well as the three Wiikwemkoong schools and hub centre. WTPS issued a Facebook notice asking residents to remain vigilant and not approach police during an active investigation.
