Coach enjoying his charges
Coach Gerry Holliday has helped kids to Varsity level sports over the years, but he has never had this many all in the same year! He was able to follow five of his former athletes into National and even international level cross country meets. The Manitoulin Secondary School Mustang alumni runners included, T.J. Green and Alan Wilkin competing for Laurentian, Mackenzie Green for Nipissing, Maren Kasunich in Windsor and Brodie Pennie runs for U.N.B. in Fredericton.
Brodie is still competing! His team moved into the Indoor Season and traveled to the States for the Sharon Colyear Danville Invitational in Boston. He competed in the Mile distance that were all timed finals run in heats. Although Brodie won his heat, his time didn’t match other heats featuring former Olympians posting quicker times.
Also running at the National level are Xavi Mara and Wyatt Williamson-Wright who ran in the U-18 division at the Canadian National Meet in London. Congratulations to you Gerry, enjoy.
Off the Rock, hockey!
Samuel Assinewai, now a cagey veteran with the Sudbury Cubs in the NOJHL is having another amazing season! Samuel now 20, is second in points in the whole league with 58 and a standout 1.83 points per game average! The Cubs themselves are also soaring with a 26-2-1-1 record, they lead the 12-team league. Their 54 points lead the second place, Hearst Lumberjacks by nine points at 45!
Panther points
The U-18 Lady Panther team hosted the Wiky Police Freeze this weekend for their Second Annual Hockey Challenge. Together these teams collected donations of nonperishable food items for the local food bank.
The Lady Panthers redeemed themselves after last year’s tough loss, so the series is now tied at 1-1. The team extends many thanks to the members of WTPS for the entertaining game, and to their fans for donating. The team is already looking forward to next year’s tiebreaker match.
The U15 Panthers took on the Copper Cliff Reds on Friday night, where they controlled the game and dominated with a 8-0 score. The U15s are currently sitting in first place overall in league play, remaining undefeated with a record of 6 wins and 2 ties. They have one remaining game against North Shore Thundercats in Massey before the Christmas Holidays.
The U15’s first stop in 2025 will be in Cochrane for a triple header on January 4th and 5th. This is a partnership between NDMHL and NEOHA which provides cross-over games between the two leagues. All three Manitoulin Panthers teams would like to thank their fans and supporters for coming out to cheer them on this season and they hope to see you back at the arena in 2025.
