Canadian Cross Country!

The Athletics Canada, cross country championships were held over the weekend in London with several Island runners competing. Brodie Pennie and his University of New Brunswick Reds team showing they are one of the top teams in the nation. Brodie finished 17th overall, helping UNB to the Bronze medal!

Manitoulin Secondary’s Xavier Mara and Wyatt Williamson-Wright ran for their other team, Sudbury’s Track North Athletic Club in the Forest City.

Coach Gerry Holliday put his own advice to good use competing in the Master 6K race. He finished fifth in his age group. His team, the Newmarket Huskies finished second overall to the tough, Runners Choice side from Alberta. Congratulations to all!

Carter Catch-up!

Carter George, is one of four goalies of the 32 total players that have been selected to the selection camp for this year’s IIHF World Junior Championships! The camp starts next week in Ottawa at TD Place. Those moving on will play several pre-tournament games before the ‘traditional’ Boxing Day, first game, of the Tournament also to be held in Ottawa. Carter of course has an impressive resume and success on the international front with National team Gold in the latest U-18 and Hlinka-Gretzky Tournaments.

In his regular season he continues to put up impressive numbers despite stats, less-than-so, from the team in front of him. The young Los Angeles King is putting in his dues, gaining experience on his OHL Owen Sound Attack squad. The Attack, is struggling among the bottom-dwellers of the league with a 7 and 14 record. Carter on his end, has faced the second highest number of shots and made the second overall number of saves in all of the OHL. Amazingly, he still has a plus-900 save percentage and a glass-half-full-view is that he is seeing more ‘training-shots’ than almost every goalie in the ‘O’!

Off the Rock, Hockey!

The Ottawa 67’s Kohyn Eshkawkogan is tied for the lead now with nine points among rookie D-men although Kohyn has six games in hand.

The 67’s had a tough afternoon against a projected Memorial Cup contender, the London Knights on Sunday. They got a bit of a spanking, 10-3 although Kohyn was one of the bright spots, being +1 in the loss, even with the team being down to five defencemen after the first period!

Panther Points!

Here is a quick update on our Panther teams. The U18 Lady Panthers were busy practicing this week in preparation for next weekend’s double header against the Lady Wolves in Sudbury on Saturday.

The U13 Panthers have been gaining valuable experience although it is not translating to a lot of wins yet. They met the Sudbury Cubs and the North Shore Thundercats this weekend.

The U15 team headed to Levack on Sunday to beat the Sudbury Cubs with a score of 5-1. Both the U13 and U15 teams are heading to North Bay Next weekend to play in the East Nipissing Pre Christmas Blast. Good luck, Panthers!
