Coast Guard to commence ice breaking in the North Channel

NORTH CHANNEL–The OPP has issued a safety notice for the North Shore and North Channel from the Canadian Coast Guard, with special attention to area snowmobilers and ice fishing enthusiasts.

“The Canadian Coast Guard wishes to inform people living in communities along the North Channel of Lake Huron that icebreaking operations will begin near Bruce Mines on or about April 21,” a release from the Canadian Coast Guard states. “A United States Coast Guard Ship will conduct the icebreaking operations in order to facilitate shipping in the area.”

Any ice on this route should be considered unsafe and the Coast Guard advises everyone to stay clear. Tracks can remain open long after the ships have departed the area.

The Canadian and United States Coast Guards work in full co-operation on the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay.
