Central Manitoulin Public School crowned Island elementary cross-country champions

GORE BAY—Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) is the 2016 Manitoulin Island elementary cross-country running champion.

CMPS won the overall championship with a total of 13 points. They were followed by Wasse-Abin (Wikwemikong) in second place with 11 points, and Little Current Public School (LCPS) third with a total of 10.5 points.

Bruce Lindsay, a teacher at C.C. McLean who was one of the organizers of the event (held at C.C. McLean in Gore Bay on Thursday of last week) and master of ceremonies at the awards presentation, said, “we all need to thank our coaches, trail captains and volunteers; and the kids who wouldn’t stop running.”

In the girls’ eight-year-old division, CMPS was first with Assiginack second and C.C. McLean third. Individually, Mya Balfe (CMPS) was first.

The boys’ age eight division saw LCPS first, Assiginack second and CMPS third. Rylan Pennie of Assiginack was first in this division.

In 9-10 girls’ age category, LCPS took top spot, with CMPS and C.C. McLean in second and third. Maren Kasunich of Lakeview was first in this division.

The boys’ 9-10 division saw LCPS in top spot. C.C. McLean, Assiginack and CMPS finished second and third. Davin Deschenes of LCPS was first in this division.

Wasse-Abin was first in the girls’ age 11-12 division, followed by CMPS and LCPS. Shaolin Roy of Pontiac was first.

The boys’ 11-12 division saw C.C. McLean in first, Assiginack second and Wasse-Abin third. Trent Bell of C.C. McLean finished first in this division.

In the girls age 13+ division Wasse-Abin was first with CMPS and C.C. McLean in second and third. Francesca Pheasant of Pontiac was first individually.

The boys’ 13+ category saw Wasse-Abin first, CMPS second. LCPS was third. Owen Duncanson of CMPS was first individually in this division.
