Central Manitoulin council applies for funding for Union Road Bridge

CENTRAL MANITOULIN—Although the main impact of the weight limitations on the Union Road Bridge tend to fall on the residents of a neighbouring municipality, Central Manitoulin council passed a motion instructing staff to apply for funding to replace the bridge. Councillor Derek Stephens moved the motion, seconded by Councillor Alex Baran.

“I hope the government does realize that their new bus route that they put in can’t cross that bridge with the weight restriction,” said Councillor Stephens.

“We are asking Burpee Mills to write a letter of support for the project,” said CAO Ruth Frawley. “It does impact the ratepayers in that community the most.”

The new Manitoulin bus route put in place by Ontario Northland was required to cancel the Evansville leg of the route due to the 10-ton weight restrictions placed on the Union Road Bridge as their 30-passenger bus weighs in at 15 tons.
