CC McLean students recognized in public speaking

GORE BAY—Several students at Charles C. McLean Public School (C.C. McLean) in Gore Bay have been recognized for their efforts in the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) annual poster, poem and essay contest this year by the RCL Branch 514 in Gore Bay.

“You all should be proud of your accomplishments,” said Jim Woods of RCL Branch 514, who along with fellow Legion member Michael Lalonde presented certificates to the students. Mr. Lalonde explained he is an ordinary RCL member, meaning he served in the military. Mr. Woods, who did not serve in the military, but whose father Marv served in the military, is an associate Legion member.

Both Mr. Woods and Mr. Lalonde are co-chairs of the poppy committee at RCL Branch 514.

“We are here today to present awards to the students whose poster, poem or essay won the school competition and went on to the zone and district levels,” said Mr. Woods.

In the Zone H-3 primary division, black and white poster, Naomi Bond finished in second place. In the junior H-3 division black and white poster, Emma Chaytor was first, while Kane Noble in the junior essay contest and Emily Deremo in the junior poem contest both finished in first place. Lily Wiwchar was third in the junior division coloured poster category. The RCL zone area includes the area from Elliot Lake, Chapleau to Sudbury and Manitoulin Island.

At the district H Level, Emma Chaytor placed third in the junior division poster black and white category, with second place going to Kane Noble in the junior essay category and Emily Deremo third in the junior poem category division. The District H-3 area takes in Sault Ste. Marie to North Bay and Chapleau to Parry Sound.

C.C. McLean teacher April Patterson was the main organizer for the school for the contest. “It is remarkable how well all of you did in the other levels of the contest. It is obvious a lot of work went into your entries for the contest,” she said.

“We appreciate the school entering the contest and representing our legion,” added Mr. Woods.
