Cambrian College introduces new tourism program

SUDBURY—Tourism is one of Canada’s main economic drivers, and the industry is growing. To meet this demand, Cambrian College is introducing a new tourism program, beginning in September.

This new two-year tourism program is being offered through the college’s Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business. Through the program, students will learn about the latest trends and best practices in hospitality and tourism and gain practical skills to become leaders in the sector.

The curriculum was developed in consultation with industry representatives and includes interactive course work and training on the latest industry software. Students will also acquire management, organization and leadership skills, along with the ability to develop, market and deliver memorable experiences for organizations of all types and sizes.

“The industry has transformed in so many new and innovative ways and we’re excited to be offering tourism as part of our business programming,” said Janice Clarke, Cambrian’s vice-president academic. “It’s a multi-billion-dollar industry that includes the traditional aspects of tourism such as resorts and destination attractions, but also includes conferences, special events, sports, gaming, and sustainable tourism.”

Because success in tourism is driven by customer satisfaction, students will also have the option to take on a placement or major project to gain first-hand perspective and experience in the planning and execution of high-quality customer experiences.

“This is a program for anyone seeking a mix of adventure, marketing, travel and business,” adds Ms. Clarke. “We want to educate and train the next generation of leaders in tourism because there are plenty of opportunities in the field, either to work for an existing organization or launch your own business.”
