I hope everyone had a great May long weekend! Today is the last Friday of May. Wow….how time has flown. There is a little more than a month left until the end of school.

On Monday, May 14 a speaker from Haven House came in to talk to the Grade 7 and 8s about healthy and unhealthy relationships. The students learned what healthy and unhealthy relationships consist of and how to get out of an unhealthy relationship.

On Wednesday, May 16 all classes got a chance to participate in Science North workshops during the morning and early afternoon in either the French room or the library. Some of the workshops included working with hydraulics and virtual reality. In the afternoon, the whole school gathered in the gym for a presentation. During the presentation, buoyancy and friction experiments were conducted with the students.

A science joke for you:

Why was Adam afraid of science class?

Because he heard that they were splitting the atom.

On Thursday, May 17 the grade 6/7 and 8s had another yoga session with Pam Wiwchar. During this session, students were introduced to new poses.

On Tuesday, May 22 EQAO Primary and Junior assessments started for Grades 3 and 6 students. EQAO assessments will continue until June 4. The EQAO assessments consist of math, reading and writing exercises.

On Wednesday, May 23 Grade 8 students travelled to Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) for the Grade 8 Shadow Day. Grade 8 students from across the Island participated in Shadow Day. As the students arrived they played ‘ice breaker’ games. Then the students got partnered up with a high school student volunteer. The Grade 8s followed their partner to their second period class. This way the Grade 8s have had the experience of sitting in a class as well as starting to learn their way around the school. The Grade 8 students enjoyed a pizza lunch after.

On Thursday, May 24 the Grades 7 and 8 students held an entrepreneur fair in the library. Students had to create a business and make product to sell. Some products that were sold at the fair included popcorn, smoothie bars, cookies, magnets, jewelry, hair accessories, chocolate covered bacon, pom pom carpets, wooden signs and linen spray. The top five businesses will participate in another entrepreneur fair in Sudbury on June 7. Thank you to everyone that came out to support the Grades 7 and 8 businesses.

Today, May 25 the Grade 4s travelled to the Espanola pool for their second session of Swim to Survive.

On Friday, June 1 there will be a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) presentation for Grades 7 and 8 students.

Joke of the week: What happens when business is slow at a medicine factory? You can hear a cough drop.

Upcoming events include EQAO Assessments, MADD Canada presentation and Junior and Intermediate track and field.

Until next time, “Dream and Believe. Learn and Achieve!”
