MINDEMOYA—The annual Campbell Horticultural Society (CHS) flower show and tea, with the title “Butterflies and Bees” brought together a bevy of flowers, arrangements and participants again this year.
“I am a summer resident of Manitoulin Island,” said Camilla Yahnke, of Sudbury. “I have belonged to the CHS for at least 40 years. I enjoy being a member and all the summer activities we have including the flower show,” she said, adding, “I’m one of the older members of the society.”
There were over 100 entries in the flower show, held at the Mindemoya Community Centre on Wednesday, August 2. There were houseplants, roses, corm plants, dahlias, perennials, tuberous, annuals, vegetables, photographs, specials, vegetables, outdoor and indoor potted plants and lots more.
The People’s Choice Award was won by Seija Bailey, for her Wayside Design, while the Judges’ Choice, Parallel Design was won by Ms. Yahnke. The latter won the President’s Choice Award for her Ikebana Queen Bee.
In the most points of show competition Ms. Yahnke took top spot with 83 points, followed by Seija Bailey with 66, Marie Kirk with 63 and Mary Scott with 44.
The award for best dahlia was won by Seija Bailey, while the best potted tuberous begonia was won by Mary Scott; the prize for best lily went to Ms. Yahnke, with best ‘any other variety’ won by Marie Kirk.
The first-place prize for outdoor potted plant-strawberries, shamrocks and petunias was won by Melody Hore.
Wayne Bailey took top prize for best perennial hydrangea, best rose was won by Ms. Yahnke, best geranium Penny Palonen, best African violet Bernice Lewis, best house plant Diane Chmielak, best outdoor potted plant Marie Kirk, who also took the top prize for best collection. The best vegetable prize was won by Penny Palonen, and the best photo prize was won by Melody Hore.
After everyone in attendance had the opportunity to view all the flowers and plants on display, and the award winners were selected, everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the delicious lunch of sandwiches and desserts as well as tea and soft drinks in the downstairs area of the community centre.
