KAGAWONG—A proposal made by Billings Township council to purchase St. Paul’s On the Hill United Church in Kagawong has now been accepted.
“At our presbytery executive meeting a decision was made to approve the sale of the church to the township (Billings),” said Barb Nott, chair of the Sudbury Presbytery late last week. Although she noted she could not provide the figures on how much the church has been sold for to the township, she noted the deal will probably be complete in December once all paper work has been completed.
The Recorder has learned that the church was purchased by the township for $1,000.
As had been reported previously, Billings township council considered options on how it could help to keep one of the oldest buildings in the township useable, considering its pending closure. Delegates of St. Paul’s On the Hill United Church met with council earlier this year to explain that due to decreasing congregation numbers the church will be closing. They were seeking council’s input on potential municipal interest in the church.
Council then passed a motion to enter into negotiations with the owners to be purchase the church.
No decision has been made by the township council, at this time, as to what use to the municipality will have for the building.
