Billings sets January 31 as nomination deadline for vacant council seat

KAGAWONG—Members of Billings council voiced their disappointment that former councillor Jim Cahill resigned from his position on council while also considering options for his replacement at a recent meeting.

“Councillor Jim Cahill provided notice to myself and the clerk (Emily Dance) in writing that he was submitting his resignation from council on December 14, effective immediately,” said Mayor Bryan Barker.

“I was very disappointed to hear this news,” said Councillor Dave Hillyard. “Jim did a really good job. We didn’t agree on everything, but he was a good councillor and I wish he would have stuck it out on council. I wish him all the best.””

“I concur with Councillor Hillyard,” stated Councillor Vince Grogan. “Jim brought an analytical view to the table. He did a lot of good work on council. He will be missed.”

“I wish Jim all the best, he was a good councillor and will be missed,” said Councillor Michael Hunt.

“I spoke to Jim on this and said he had a lot of offer on council. I thanked him for his time on council and for benefitting the community, and all the best in his future endeavours,” said Mayor Barker.

Council passed a motion accepting the resignation of Mr. Cahill from council then considered its options for filling the now vacant seat on council for the remainder of the term of council, either by appointment or by holding a by-election.

Council was informed in holding a by-election, the cost to the township for the last election held for Rainbow District School Board trustee cost $11,422. And with 2024 budget preparations it was recommended that additional staff would need to be brought in to help run the election. This would cost about $10,000.

After discussion, all members of council were in favour of going with the option of appointing an eligible elector. A nomination process where eligible electors can put forward their name for council opened earlier this month and will continue to January 31. A list of candidates will be posted on February 5 with council holding an appointment meeting on February 6.
