Big buck shot in AOK wins annual community buck contest

AUNDECK OMNI KANING—Duke Madahbee of Aundeck Omni Kaning (AOK) was the winner of the community’s seventh annual Big Buck contest this year, with his deer scoring 197 and three-quarter points under the Boone and Crockett scoring system (determined by counting and measuring the antler points).

“We had 15 people enter the contest this year, but I was the only one that shot a buck,” said Mr. Madahbee. “Individuals enter the contest by the Sunday before hunting week and you are only allowed to shoot one buck.”

Mr. Madahbee said he started the contest seven years ago to help conserve the deer population.

“If you’re in the contest, you’re waiting all week to shoot a big buck and you can only shoot one so it helps save deer,” explained Mr. Madahbee, who noted that the contest is open to anyone from any community across Manitoulin.

Mr. Madahbee shot his winning buck last Thursday afternoon from his wife’s tree stand in AOK.

“She shot but missed it (the buck) on Wednesday so I thanked her when I got it,” he laughed.

In addition to the $300 prize money, Mr. Madahbee will also have his name and his buck score added to the contest plaque.
