MANITOWANING—Manitoulin photographer Peter Baumgarten of Creative Island Photography has had one of his images featured in an article on mushrooms for the September issue of Canadian Geographic.
“At the start of the summer Canadian Geographic had reached out to me wanting to feature one of my images as part of an article on mushrooms for the September issue,” Mr. Baumgarten told The Expositor. “I received my copy (of the magazine) last week and the timing is perfect. I spent some time on the weekend photographing a new crop of fantastic fungi.”
“Fungus benefit mushrooms,” said
Mr. Baumgarten. He explained the photograph he took for the magazine was taken in McLean’s Park. “The park has a great hiking trail and after we see some rainfall it is loaded with mushrooms. The photograph I took at night is a composite image reproduced from several shots I took,” he said noting the magazine editors, “wanted something more whimsical.”
The note accompanying the photo in the magazine reads, “early autumn finds the photographer tramping trough the woods looking for the many mushrooms that pop up at this time of year. This fairy tale scene, taken at McLean’s Park on Manitoulin Island, is a composite. Mr. Baumgarten shot each mushroom cap separately, using a simple string of LEDs to light the undersides.
