Bad Tehkummah roads are discouraging tourists

While the self-serving fear mongering of some is tearing apart years of cooperation and friendship

To the Expositor:

Spring has sprung, grass has risen, I’m wondering, what bridges don’t?

It was so nice to read that the monarchs should have a strong showing on the Island this summer, but thankfully they don’t have to rely on the road system. Never quite seen the Michael’s Bay Road as bad as this spring. Not sure how you encourage tourists to visit, stay and fish when the road is as ridiculously bad as it has been the last three visits this spring. I feel so sorry for anyone living on that road. Hopefully a call to the Tekhummah office did some good.

Can someone give the travelling public an update on scheduled Island road work for this summer? I am hearing that the bridge in Providence Bay is getting a facelift as well as the bridge on Hwy 540 in Kagawong.

On a separate note, I would like to thank every landowner who allowed us permission to ride our sleds across their properties this winter and to the Manitoulin club for all of their efforts. It brings tears to my eyes when I think that 30 or 40 years of friendships between club volunteers and landowners would all of a sudden be torn into shreds by fear mongering for the sake, well I’ll reserve that or this paper will suffer through three more articles. I get it, I understand, I’m in the same boat, but both my federal Member of Parliament Larry Miller (PC) (also a landowner) and MPP Bill Walker (PC) have publicly confirmed that I as a landowner am secure in my rights and that this bill does not compromise my property. Manitoulin will suffer a negative economic impact if trails are lost and that is not what good neighbours do. We in rural Ontario rely on and trust and respect our neighbours, they are our life line, our friends. Can anyone with a sled trail on their property on the Island actually believe that this dedicated group of volunteers would do anything to compromise that?

Get ready for the next self-serving article. Honestly, all I wanted to do was mention the monarchs and road and bridges but, well, you know!

Chi-Cheemaun countdown is on. Six weeks I believe.
