Awards Night sees over 200 awards in excess of $49K gifted to students

M’CHIGEENG—Manitoulin Secondary School’s (MSS) 46th annual Awards Night was held on December 17, while many of the students the awards were meant to honour were still busily writing exams, but friends and family gladly stepped in to accept the over $49,000 in awards Island donors generously gave to this worthy cause.

MSS Principal Laurie Zahnow told the audience of the new record of over 200 awards valued in excess of $49,000, noting how fortunate the school is to have such support from its community.

The principal then introduced the guests of honour, MPP Michael Mantha, MP Carol Hughes, Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Norm Blaseg, Superintendent of Schools Kathy Wachuk and vice principal David Wiwchar.

“On behalf of the Rainbow District School Board, it is a great privilege to be here to honour MSS’ finest,” said Mr. Blaseg. “Every award is the best gift any organization and business can give—gifts that further their education. You will be the benefactors of the awards, and the community as well.”

After a playful admonishment to students who might be inclined to strike poses for the camera and then post them to social media, MPP Michael Mantha reminded the students in attendance that the “life is a lifelong interview” and that many employers now look to social media profiles before making a hire.

“Don’t forget to come back home,” he told the students. “We’re going to need you. Don’t forget where home is.”

MP Carol Hughes congratulated the 2015 graduating class. “This is an achievement that will lead to exciting new endeavours,” she said. “Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and what you will continue to achieve. You have developed the skillset to become lifelong leaders. Looking at all of you today, I’m confident you can do this.”

“Moving forward is a credit to the education you received at MSS,” the MP added. “These awards help makes things easier. I know our future is in good hands, and the school knows it too.”

Principal Zahnow thanked the donors and award presenters for their generosity as well as the Manitoulin Student Aid Fund, guests, staff, students, musical entertainment provided by the MSS band and parents.

“We are so proud, and by the display of awards here tonight, the community is too,” she concluded.
