WIIKWEMKOONG—The third annual Cancom Golf Tournament, which benefits Wiikwemkoong minor hockey and the Wikwemikong Board of Education, will once again feature a special guest, a former National Hockey League superstar.
“Doug Gilmour will be there, participating in the tournament, meeting and greeting participants,” said Ron Wells, president of Cancom Security. “We will also have the Stanley Cup on hand for viewing.”
Mr. Wells explained, “the tournament is being held to benefit the Wiikwemkoong Hawks as well as the board of education.” The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, August 26 at the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Manitowaning.
“Usually most of the teams and players taking part register at the last minute,” said Mr. Wells. “We have had tons of interest from teams and players for the tournament.”
“The last time we had the tournament we had a player cap limit of 100 players, and ended up with 160 players,” said Mr. Wells. He said registration for the tournament will take place at 10:30 am with a shotgun start at noon hour.
Teams of four will pay $1,000 per team or $250 per player to take part in the 18-hole tournament. “We are looking for four player teams, but players can register as singles. We want everyone who wants to come out and enjoy the day to do so,” said Mr. Wells. He pointed out there is an online portal where teams can register, cancomgolfcharity.com
There will be a steak dinner for all players after the tournament concludes, and lots of prizes such as signed jerseys, hockey cards and photographs of Mr. Gilmour. Mr. Gilmour played 20 seasons in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens. He was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Calgary Flames team in 1989.
“I have got to know Doug over the past four years, and been involved in many charity events with him,” said Mr. Wells. “He does a lot of charity work like this; it seems every week he attends some sort of charity event. He’s loved everywhere and is a great draw for an event like this.”
“Golf is one of the many things people on the Island really love,” added Mr. Wells.
