Elizabeth Creith’s book ‘Shepherd in Residence’ is a wonderful collection of the author’s stories about her love affair with the wilds of Northern Ontario.

Ms. Creith is a good writer with a fine sense of humour and an eye for detail. This is a charming book about real-life experiences and personal creativity.

Actor Tom Sizemore has been in dozens of movies, including ‘True Romance,’ ‘Heat,’  ‘Natural Born Killers’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ His life spiralled out of control through a drug addiction and he ended up in prison. Sizemore’s book, ‘By Some Miracle I Made it Out of There’ is a shocking, heartbreaking and incredibly in-depth look at the battle for personal triumph over the chaos of tragic choices.

‘The Beautiful Mystery’ is the eighth book by Canadian writer Louise Penny, featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. The Monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-Les-Loups is the home of 24 monks who live in silence through mediation and prayer. The only exception to this vow of quiet is the monk’s choir which is renowned throughout the music world–the singing so magical and intense that it has become known as the ‘beautiful mystery.’ However, the sudden and vicious murder of the choir’s famous director brings Gamache onto the scene. He finds that things aren’t as peaceful as they seem at the monastery. This is a terrific book by a talented author–it stirs the reader and offers up an excellent tale!

Terry Fallis is another award-winning Canadian author. His newest and fourth novel, ‘No Relation,’ follows the life of a middle-aged man working as an advertising copywriter but yearning to be a full-fledged novelist. He has so much to overcome to reach his goal–job loss, heartbreak, a family business that he has no interest in and then there is his name–Ernest Hemingway. It is hard to believe that parents could do that to a child–but now it’s time to take back his life. This book is well-written and contains all the elements of a great read–humour, faith, candour, sentiment, optimism and certainty.

Teen Pick:  ‘Graves of Ice’ by John Wilson and ‘Ice Dogs’ by Terry Lynn Johnson.

DVD Pick: ‘All is Lost’ starring Robert Redford–a thrilling tale of survival–one of Redford’s best performances to date.
