Adam Gopnik’s memoir, ‘Paris To the Moon’ is an entertaining tale of his family’s move from a busy urban American city to the historic opulence of beautiful Paris, France. As an author, Gopnik followed the footsteps of other literary greats, from Hemingway and Stein to Baldwin and Wilde and many more. This book is his journal of discovery and his learning a new lifestyle in a fabled city along with raising a small child there—both of these tasks are daunting and challenging propositions. This is a fascinating look at fitting into a venerated city and the struggles of parenthood intertwined—an interesting combination.
‘The Misadventures of Hector MacLeod’ by author Hugh Cowan is a story set in the days of the early pioneers along the Ontario north shore. In particular, it chronicles the life and times of a young Canadian Lieutenant (the American Revolution is just about ended and MacLeod is fighting against the Americans with the British), Hector MacLeod. When MacLeod unexpectedly arrives home, he finds that his wife has died under mysterious circumstances. The story is set in the Georgian Bay and La Cloche districts and paints a very vivid picture of the area and the people of that time. It is good read.
Bonus: the author Hugh Cowan has connection to the townships of Assiginack and Tehkummah, having lived here in his childhood.
