“There is only one generation in history–ours–that will experience life both with and without the Internet,” states author Michael Harris in his new book, ‘The End of Absence: Reclaiming What We’ve Lost in a World of Constant Connection.’ Mr. Harris declares that our greatest loss in this digital hailstorm will be absence itself—of silence, wonder and solitude. The book’s main message–we need to have a better balance with technology because once we’ve lost the gift of absence, we may never remember it’s value–and that would be a terrible shame.

‘Spam Nation: The Inside Story of Organized Cybercrime–From Global Epidemic to Your Front Door’ is written by investigative journalist and cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs. The book outlines the swell, ebb and ultimate resurgence of countless viruses, phishing scams and spy-ware attacks. Mr. Krebs asserts that it is a world-wide problem, a threat to buyers everywhere.  It is critical that there be action taken to stop this tsunami of cybercrime before it engulfs us and takes total control.

John LeCarre is a master storyteller, particularly of spy-thriller fiction. In his book ‘A Delicate Truth,’ a plot to capture/kidnap a jihadist arms buyer is set up and carried out–years later a message from ‘the dead’ causes the case to be investigated. It is a matter of conscience and duty having to win in this battle with evil. This is an exciting read with a cast of incredible characters–superb as always in the LeCarre tradition!

‘The Winter Palace’ by Eva Stachniak is a passionate novel about one of history’s most famous and dominant women–Russia’s Catherine the Great.  Scandal, royal intrigue, suspense and a colourfully crafted collection of personalities make this an outstanding read from an exceptional author.

Young Adult Reads: ‘Shadow and Bone’ by Leigh Bardugo.

DVD Pick: ‘The Red Tent’ starring Minnie Driver, Debra Winger, Morena Baccarin, Iain Glen and Will Tudor–a story set in Old Testament times–the tale of Rachel, Leah, Zilpah and Bilhah; the four wives of Jacob–good acting and fantastic sets and costuming!
