Accounts for payment

At its October 4 regular meeting, Assiginack council approved the following accounts for payment: general, $174,645.12; and payroll, $19,231.87.

Ice time donation

Council received a letter from Manitowaning Minor Hockey Association President Ron Cooper, asking for 12 hours in ice time donation for the association’s fourth annual Pro Tech hockey school.

Council approved this donation, but Councillor Brenda Reid asked that in future, a letter be sent in earlier for budgeting purposes.

Canada Post Community Foundation Grant

Assiginack Public Library received funding from the Canada Post Community Foundation Grant for $4,289. The funding is being used to purchase the following resources for the recently expanded library: children’s area: library on wheels, book display cart, creative cart, corner reading mat, mobile children’s work table, and teen area: backstop shelving, study table, stacking chairs, and bean bag chairs.

Canada 150 Fund application

Assiginack has applied to the Canada 150 Fund for enhanced Canada Day celebrations, including fireworks!

October 22 horse show

Council reviewed a letter from Sylvia Moggy, president of the Manitoulin Light Horse Club, to request permission to use the horse arena for a horse show on Saturday, October 22. Ms. Moggy requested that the canteen and washrooms inside the arena be open. She explained that she approached the Virtnanens (who operate the canteen) about being open, which they will be, as the ice is going in the same day.

Council approved the use of the horse ring for the October 22 horse show.

Both Councillors Case and Reid said they were happy to see it used and hoped to see it used more often.

Ms. Moggy noted that this will be the final horse show of the year and gives riders a chance to bonus their points.

Bylaw 16-14

Council passed Bylaw 16-14 to authorize a contribution agreement between Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Ontario and the Township of Assiginack regarding the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, formula-based component.

This year’s funds will go towards the hard surfacing of roads.
