NORTHEAST TOWN—Paulette Stewart carries her painting equipment to a viewpoint alongside Bass Creek waterfalls. She is part of a group of “en plein air” artists who paint or draw outdoors at scenic locations around the Island. They were at this dramatic spot on May 31.
It might surprise the average art patron to learn that most artists nowadays work exclusively with photos taken at a site and later used as subjects back in the studio. “Nothing can replace the immediacy of being immersed in the actual landscape,” says Ms. Stewart.
During the warmer months, our local plein air artists enjoy getting together at places like Pepper Point Gardens, Sheguiandah village, and the Ten Mile Point lookout. They do endure some inconveniences caused by weather changes, insects, or rough terrain far from the comforts of an indoor studio.
Many benefits offset these difficulties though. “The support and social rapport of fellow painters, the freshness of the outdoor scenes, and even the necessity of having to work fairly quickly before the atmosphere changes, all make for a special experience,” Ms. Stewart claims. “It helps to have a kit of essential supplies all ready to go.”
The Internet provides good websites that give advice to novices who want to try the plein air method. Experienced or not, to join in on some of the dates planned for this summer, you can call 705-368-3084 or 705-368-2037 for more information. Or just show up with your pencils and brushes!
Upcoming paint outs include: Little Current, June 7, meeting at the memorial on Water Street; June 21, Whitehaven Cottages on Sheguiandah Bay. The group meets at 9:30 am and can work till 3:30 pm, usually breaking for lunch together. All ages, summer visitors welcome.
