Annual Gore Bay Ladies’ Curling Bonspiel offered plenty of on-ice excitement

The Shirley Dewar rink of Providence Bay, which also included Susie Barker, Brenda Webber and Katherine Carriere, won the third event final at the annual Gore Bay ladies’ curling bonspiel last weekend. The team was presented with the Sandie Merrylees Memorial Trophy.

GORE BAY—The Ellen Holroyd rink of Mindemoya won the annual Gore Bay ladies’ curling bonspiel held on the weekend.

The Holroyd rink, which also included second Jeannie Lefebvre, vice Bev McDermid and lead Pat MacDonald, defeated “The Baymouth Babes” team including Lenora Tann, Lorie Leeson, Janet Anning and May Bowerman.

The Holroyd rink was presented with the Doris “Toots” Strain Memorial trophy for winning the first event. “On behalf of our team I would like to thank everyone for coming out to play this weekend. It was an amazing way to start the season,” said Ms. Holroyd. She praised all those who helped make the weekend a success for all 16 rinks entered, including the ice makers, kitchen and bar staff.

The winning rink in the second event was the Kim Orford team which defeated the Sherry Forest rink in the final. The Kim Orford rink, which included Lee Chatwell, Kyra Lanktree and Barb Armstrong were presented with the Phyllis Smith Memorial Trophy. The Sherry Forest rink included Heather Hall, Holly Clark and Nancy Head.

In the third event the Shirley Dewar rink defeated the Elva Carter rink in the final. The Dewar rink, which included Brenda Webber, Katherine Carriere and Susie Barker, were presented with the Sandie Merrylees Memorial Trophy. The Elva Carter rink also included Linda Williams, Bev Woestenenk and Sue Flynn.

Ms. Dewar said, “It’s been a while since I’ve played in the Gore Bay bonspiel. For us to win the Sandie Merrylees trophy means so much to me. We had played in bonspiels together and had travelled to watch Brier championships.”

The Kim Orford rink won the second event at the annual Gore Bay ladies’ curling bonspiel. The rink included, from left, Lee Chatwell, Barb Armstrong, Kyra Lanktree and Kim Orford. The rink was presented with the Phyllis Smith Memorial Trophy.

Dan Marois, president of the Gore Bay Curling Club, thanked all the teams for taking part despite the very poor weather for much of the weekend. He also praised the ice makers, kitchen and bar staff, particularly Eric Ruediger for his work on the ice, Kim Orford for getting the donation of prizes and in leading the kitchen staff in preparing the dinner Saturday night. He also praised the many businesses who donated prizes for the bonspiel.
