MINDEMOYA—The 31st Annual Blizzard Open Golf Tournament took place on September 14 at the Brookwood Brae Golf Course in Mindemoya. Ninety-two golfers took part, making up 22 teams, with the overall winners being John Seabrook and his team of four in first place for the men. Ashley Debassige’s team of four in first place for the women.
There were contests and prizes galore thanks to the monetary and prize donations of many. Kory Robert of Robert Pest Management, Mike and Barb McKechnie of Mindemoya Home Hardware, Carol Patterson of Mindemoya Foodland, Pauline and Darren Smith for M’Chigeeng Fresh Mart, prizes, and Logan Middleton for prizes from Brookwood Brae.
Darryl Van Horn of Van Horn Insurance sponsored the $10,000 hole-in-one prize. “Unfortunately, no one won that prize,” Karen Cranston said.
Ms. Cranston, along with Marjorie Moody and Steve Shaffer, were the organizers of the event. Ms. Cranston expressed special thanks for a generous cash donation from John Seabrook. “And to Brookwood Brae Golf for all their help in organizing our tournament and putting on a wonderful meal. Special mention to Kelly for being an invaluable help. Also, thanks to the people who volunteered and stepped up to help when we needed them,”
On October 24, when all bills were paid and all proceeds were tallied, the three organizers of the Blizzard Open Golf Tournament met outside the hospital with members of the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary: Carol Gilmore, secretary of the Auxiliary, Marilyn Holmes, Mary Alice Lewis, treasurer, Leila Thureson and Annette Murphy, assistant treasurer. The auxiliary was presented with a cheque for $4,000.
Mary Alice Lewis accepted the donation, “Our auxiliary is grateful for this opportunity to say, ‘Thank you’ for making this donation to equipment for our Mindemoya Hospital,” she said.
The funds donated are earmarked for a Quidel Triage, which tests blood for specific enzyme and proteins in blood plasma. The auxiliary will continue to raise funds for the purchase of one of these on-site machines for the Mindemoya Hospital. The total cost of the machine is $10,000, but with the generous contribution from the Blizzard Open Golf Tournament, they’re well on their way to reaching that goal.
