An ode to Manitoulin

Shared to invoke the same feelings in others

To the Expositor:

Please find enclosed a poem written by Shirley (a former Manitouliner) I have just met (also a distant relative). She is, in my opinion, excellent at what she does and I just had to get her permission to forward it to you. We now live in the same retirement home, next suite to me (310). I just thought you might like to publish it in the Expositor. There a number of our both common relatives around the Isle who we think likely also have the same feelings about the good Isle of Manitoulin.

Thank you,

Joyce (nee Sagle) Chilton

Manitoulin

There’s an island in Huron that we all love

Its beauty must come from God above.

The air is pure, so clean and fresh,

And streams about with many fish.

Cedar, pine and silver birch,

Make the woods seem like a church.

‘Round every corner there’s a lake

To fill us with wonder each breath we take.

Manitoulin is its name,

If you visit you will never be the same.

Our ancestors came from here,

And we have memories we hold dear.

With a feast for the eye and food for the soul.

Shirley (nee Marwick) Huckins
