Ali & the Thieves bringing Leonard Cohen to life in Providence Bay

PROVIDENCE BAY—Celebrated Australian music collective Ali & the Thieves are bringing their critically acclaimed narrative concert, Leonard Cohen Koans to Providence Bay’s Salon in the Chapel on July 14.

The tour features Ali Hughes singing lead vocals and Dr. Daryl Wallis on keyboard.

The group has been headlining internationally in venues from Sydney’s iconic Opera House and The Basement to New York’s Duplex Cabaret Theatre and Le Poisson Rouge. Ali & the Thieves have also been featured at the Sydney and New York International Fringe Festivals and headlined the International Leonard Cohen Fan Festival.

Ms. Hughes and her compatriots have thrilled audiences from Sydney to Dublin and New York City with their critically acclaimed ode to Leonard Cohen being hailed as “heart-stopping…exquisitely delivered” by www.theatermania.com, as “spine-tingling” by SX Magazine and “sophisticated and beautifully executed” by unFringed. Nytheatre.com proclaimed their interpretation of ‘I’m Your Man’ as “hands down the best I’ve ever heard!”

Praised by Huffington Post as “exceptionally well-crafted” and “an excellent complement to the (Jennifer) Warnes classic” (Famous Blue Raincoat) Leonard Cohen Koans is a must see show for both Cohen lovers and newcomers alike.

Beautiful lead vocalist Ali Hughes, renowned for her dynamic, passionate and sensuous voice, winds through this thoughtfully curated collection of Leonard Cohen’s famous poetry, prose and song, as well as lesser known gems such as ‘The Guests’ and ‘The Butcher.’ Attending this show, you will hear many of your Cohen favourites, including the moving ‘If It Be Your Will,’ his magnificent ‘Chelsea Hotel #2’ and the undeniable classic masterpiece ‘Suzanne.’  Ali tours and records with multi-award winning Canadian artist, Jane Siberry, who declares that “Ali’s is one of my favourite voices.”

Musically directed by pianist and composer Daryl Wallis, winner of the prestigious Australian arts industry Green Room Award, Leonard Cohen Koans moves from the ethereal to full throttle in a heartbeat, and tips a hat to the 20th Century icon’s little-known devotion to Zen Buddhism.

Tickets are $30 at the door for unreserved seating, doors open at 7:30 pm, Sunday, July 14 with the performance to take place at 8 pm. See ad on page 11 for more information.
