Pray for wisdom for the American electorate
To the Expositor:
A Trump presidency would be devastating to our Canadian economy: here’s why.
Donald Trump says he will bring all the jobs back to the USA. That means the USA would stop buying goods and services from other countries. And that would be devastating to those other countries’ economies including our Canadian economy. Just think what it would do to our auto parts manufacturing plants alone–to our other manufacturers and industries that depend on selling their goods to the USA and to other countries. Those other countries’ economies would suffer from such a US policy and therefore be less able to buy products made in Canada by Canadian workers.
It was this “America First” doctrine that was largely responsible for the Great Depression of the 1930s. When the USA stopped buying foreign goods, those foreign countries retaliated by not buying American goods. Before long there was very little international trade. The result were very few jobs anywhere in any of the formerly trading countries: but there was lots and lots of poverty everywhere.
Our Canadian economy, our jobs, and our prosperity depend on our ability to sell our goods and services to the United States and to other countries.
Mr. Obama has led the United States down the wrong road economically and militarily. His weak immigration and foreign policies have been damaging at home and have further driven the Middle East down the road of chaos making those countries more fertile grounds for terrorist propaganda and recruitment. The terrorists see Mr. Obama as a weakling and therefore the USA an easy target.
The American people are angry and afraid. Donald Trump’s bombastic approach feeds on this anger and fear: it sounds good to many people. But some of this same bombast has alienated America’s Muslim allies–these are allies that have recently formed a coalition that has declared war on ISIS. They are essential to the USA in its fight against terrorism.
Obama campaigned on the promise of hope and change and that got him elected twice. But hope and change turned out to be a mirage–a vast hollow of nothingness.
Trump’s verboseness, without substance he has so far failed to articulate, will not solve any of America’s problems any more than Obama’s hope and change has done. Furthermore, some of what Mr. Trump has been saying has potentially devastating consequences for our Canadian economy, other countries’ economies and ultimately the US economy.
Pray with me for wisdom for the American electorate. The safety, well-being and prosperity of America and the free world depend on an answer to this prayer.
