A response to Brad Middleton’s “most important problem”

Maybe Justin Trudeau has the bravery and intelligence to see how sunny ways work

To the Expositor:

In response to Brad Middleton’s letter regarding “the most important problem facing mankind,” I’d like to remind folks that Wilfrid Laurier’s “sunny way” approach to conflict actually worked quite well.

Laurier asked, “Do you not believe that there is more to be gained by appealing to the heart and soul of men rather than to compel them to do a thing?” (from Laurier’s speech at Morrisburg, Ontario, October 8, 1895 quoted at canadahistory.com)

In the war on terror we’ve tried the “ready, aye, ready” route of joining coalitions. A very long 14 years later the war still rages on. The terrorists continue to terrorize, assault and kill those they hate. We have tried to compel them to cease their horribly insane and despicable acts of terror. War hasn’t really worked, has it?

Maybe Justin Trudeau has the bravery and intelligence to see how sunny ways might just work. Maybe he has surrounded himself with a good collection of men and women (since our most important problems face humankind and it is 2015) from various religious and non-religious persuasions and racial backgrounds to provide fresh ideas for solving our most urgent problems, instead of falling back into the tired old warmongering mentality that has plagued our poor planet.

This holiday season listen to the radio and you will sometimes hear a John Lennon sing “and so, happy Christmas…war is over if you want it.”
